Why Interactive Read Aloud? (IRA)

Let's chat first about what in interactive read aloud is:

It's an instructional method that provides a model for reading and thinking about texts (structure, story elements, vocabulary, and author’s craft and purpose). IRA provides a scaffold for students as they observe the teacher modeling proficient reading and thinking, and prompting students to think and talk at.

What is the purpose of IRA?

  • To preview reading skills highlighted in the unit or bend/part of the unit
  • To provide a model for how to think at various parts of the text
  • To support students as they apply the strategy with peers
  • To scaffold from heavy support to less support

If you have been wanting to implement this in your classroom, but you aren't sure where to start, I can help you and take the overwhelm out of it for you!
